If you spent any part of this summer at the Budlong Aquatic Center, your ears probably held onto more water than you realized.
Rhode Islanders pack a lot of swimming into a short season, and most people don’t think twice about their ears until something feels off days later. That itchy, muffled feeling isn’t just annoying, it’s usually a sign water stuck around longer than it should have.
Your ear canal isn’t built to handle constant moisture, no matter how much time you spend in the water each summer. Repeated swims wash away the natural oils that keep it protected, leaving skin more prone to irritation or infection.
Add in chlorine or bacteria from the pool, and your ears end up dealing with more than a little water.
The ear canal has curves rather than a straight path to the eardrum. Those bends help keep dirt and other debris from traveling deeper. They can also create places where a small amount of water settles after swimming.
Earwax can change how easily that water moves back out. A thicker patch may act like a temporary barrier and leave moisture sitting behind it. Even the natural shape of your canal can make one ear drain faster than the other.
This explains why the plugged sensation sometimes appears long after you leave the water. Moisture can shift when you chew, turn your head or lie down. Suddenly, an ear that seemed fine at the beach may sound muffled later that evening.
Most people think of earwax as something that needs to be cleaned out. In reality, a healthy amount of earwax helps protect the skin inside your ear canal. Its waxy coating keeps water from sitting directly against that skin for long periods.
Earwax also catches dust, sand and other small particles before they travel deeper. Your ears usually handle the cleanup themselves. As you chew and move your jaw, older wax gradually works its way toward the outer opening.
Problems can start when too much of that protective layer is removed. The canal may become drier and more sensitive, especially after several days of swimming. That irritated skin can start to itch, which often makes people want to clean even more.
That cycle can make things worse. Scrubbing or digging inside the ear may create tiny areas of irritation that were not there before. Once the skin is already sensitive, water, chlorine and friction can bother it much more quickly.
The skin inside your ear canal is thin and delicate. After it stays wet for a while, it can soften much like the skin on your fingers after a long swim. That softer surface is easier to irritate, even from something as simple as scratching.
You may not see any damage from the outside. Small breaks can form along the canal lining and leave the area feeling itchy, tender or raw. Once that protective surface is disrupted, the ear becomes more vulnerable to inflammation.
Warm weather can add to the problem. The inside of the ear is already dark and enclosed, so trapped moisture creates a comfortable environment for bacteria and fungi. If the skin is irritated at the same time, those organisms have an easier chance to cause trouble.
A day at the ocean exposes your ears to a different environment than swimming in a pond or lake. Salt, sand and small particles may enter the canal along with seawater. Some of that material can remain behind after the water itself drains.
Freshwater has its own considerations. Ponds and lakes naturally contain microorganisms and organic material from the surrounding environment. Water that sits inside an irritated canal gives those organisms more time in contact with the skin.
Neither setting guarantees that you will develop an ear problem. Your own ear anatomy, existing wax and skin condition also influence what happens afterward. Two people can take the same swim and have completely different experiences.
Pools remove many of the variables found in natural bodies of water, but they introduce chemicals. Chlorine and bromine help keep swimming water sanitary. They can also affect the natural oils along the ear canal.
Frequent exposure may leave the skin feeling dry, tight or itchy. Some swimmers notice this more as summer progresses and pool visits become more frequent. The discomfort can continue even when no water seems trapped.
Dry, itchy skin is easy to scratch without thinking twice about it. That’s a problem because nails and cotton swabs can leave tiny scratches inside your ear canal. Those spots tend to sting the next time chlorinated water hits them.
If you swim a lot, it’s worth paying attention to a pattern like this. An ear that gets itchy after every pool visit might just be reacting to chlorine over and over. That’s a different issue than the pressure you feel from a random pocket of water.
Kids don’t swim the way adults do. They’re diving under, jumping off the edge, coming up and going right back down, over and over. Every trip underwater is another shot for water to get in their ears.
Their ear canals are smaller too, so drainage doesn’t work as well. A little wax or swelling can narrow an already tight space even more. Water ends up sitting in there longer than it would in a wider canal.
Children may make matters worse without realizing it. An itchy ear invites fingers, towel corners or whatever else feels like it might help. Scratching softened canal skin can quickly turn irritation into tenderness.
They may not describe the problem clearly either. A child might say an ear feels “weird,” complain that sounds are quieter or suddenly dislike having the ear touched. Those small behavioral clues can be useful.
Swimmer’s ear does not always announce itself with sharp pain. It may start as an itch that keeps returning or an ear that feels unusually full. Symptoms often become easier to recognize as inflammation builds.

Swelling can also narrow the space that sound travels through. That is why swimmer’s ear sometimes makes hearing seem muted even when the inner ear is unaffected. The obstruction is happening farther out in the canal.
People who frequently end up with water in their ears may benefit from changing what happens before they swim. Water-specific earplugs can limit how much enters the canal. A swim cap that covers the ears offers another option for frequent swimmers.
Fit matters with professional ear protection. Something that constantly shifts or presses uncomfortably may not provide much benefit. An audiologist can help if you have trouble finding an option that works comfortably with your ears.
Once you leave the water, gravity is often more useful than aggressive cleaning. Tilting your head and gently moving the outer ear can help open the canal. Moisture that reaches the opening can then be blotted away.
Avoid putting cotton swabs, fingers or other objects into the canal. These can move wax inward rather than removing the water behind it. They may also scrape skin that has already softened from swimming.
Not every blocked ear after swimming is caused by water alone. Moisture can make existing earwax swell or shift within the canal. That can create a stubborn plugged sensation even after the water itself is gone.
Inflammation can cause a similar change. Swollen canal tissue leaves less space for sound to travel toward the eardrum. You may notice voices sounding duller on one side or feel like you are listening through an earplug.
Pain can help distinguish a simple blockage from a more irritated ear. Tenderness, drainage or discomfort when the outer ear moves deserves more attention. Those symptoms may point toward swimmer’s ear or another canal problem.
An audiologist can look inside the ear and see whether wax, swelling or something else is responsible. That is much more useful than repeatedly trying different home remedies without knowing what is blocking the canal.
A season of swimming adds up, even when your ears seem mostly fine day to day. Water finds its way in more often than people realize, and it doesn’t always announce itself right away.
